Mount Meru

Mount Meru views over the towers and the building of a friendly town of Arusha, And it is the starting point for most northern Tanzania Safaris and treks. Now officially measured as Africa’s fourth highest mountain, a few metres taller than Rash Deshen in Ethiopia, Mount Meru is a great four day trek/climb. You will trek through magical cloud forest and over high heath, with fabulous views across the plains of Tanzania to the Rift Escarpment and to Kilimanjaro. The summit approach on Meru takes you around a volcanic cone and jagged rim of austere and giant proportions. Views to mountain  ash cone within the crater are phenomena.

Mount Meru

Meru is located in Arusha National Park, where you can hope to see buffalo, giraffe, antelope, baboon and colobus monkey, as well as numerous species of birds in the cloud forest and on the plains . It’s not Tanzania’s greatest safari park by any stretch of the imagination, but it offers interesting game-viewing for those without time to venture as far as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.

Meru works very well as an acclimatiser for Kilimanjaro . See our Kilimanjaro Combo and also consider our celebrated Africa Three Peaks expedition (get in touch to learn more). For more information, visit our Kilimanjaro pages, or contact us directly.

When to climb Kilimanjaro & Meru

Good seasons to climb are December – March and June to October.

You may want to climb Kili or Meru when the moon is full or nearly full. Reaching your chosen peak in the period three or four days before or after full moon will still ensure a moon-lit climb. We can advise on the best dates.
