Day 1: Moshi/Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

  • Pick-up: Early morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
  • Drive to Momella Gate: The drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Upon arrival, your guide will assist you with registration and provide an orientation.
  • Start the trek: Hike begins from Momella Gate (1,500m), and you will ascend through lush tropical rainforest. The path is relatively gentle and gives you a chance to see wildlife such as giraffes, colobus monkeys, and baboons.
  • Arrival at Miriakamba Hut: After a 4-5 hour hike, you will reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514m). Enjoy a warm meal and relax. This hut has basic facilities, and you’ll stay overnight here.
  • Overnight: Miriakamba Hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

  • Breakfast: After breakfast, begin the ascent to Saddle Hut (3,500m). The trek becomes steeper as you leave the forest and enter the moorland zone.
  • Scenic views: As you climb, you’ll be rewarded with views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru Crater, and the surrounding landscapes. You will pass through rocky terrain and unique alpine vegetation, making this a beautiful section of the trek.
  • Arrival at Saddle Hut: After 4-5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Saddle Hut. This camp is located just below the Meru Crater, offering magnificent views of the peak and surrounding areas. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon to rest, acclimatize, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
  • Optional afternoon hike: For those who want to help with acclimatization, you can take a short hike to the Little Meru Peak (3,800m) for even better views of the crater and Kilimanjaro.
  • Overnight: Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit (Uhuru Peak) and Descent to Miriakamba Hut

  • Early morning summit attempt: Start your summit attempt very early in the morning, around 2:30 AM, to reach Uhuru Peak (4,566m) by sunrise. The hike is challenging, but the reward at the top is worth it. The route takes you through rocky paths, scree slopes, and alpine desert.
  • Summit: After 5-6 hours of trekking, you will reach the summit just in time for sunrise. The views from the top are breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Arusha National Park.
  • Descent: After spending time at the summit, you will descend back to Saddle Hut to rest. From here, continue your descent to Miriakamba Hut for the night.
  • Arrival at Miriakamba Hut: After 6-7 hours of descending, you will reach Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend your last night on the mountain.
  • Overnight: Miriakamba Hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate and Return to Moshi/Arusha

  • Breakfast: After a hearty breakfast, you’ll begin your final descent to Momella Gate.
  • Descent: The descent is a gentle 3-4 hour walk through lush forest and open meadows, with stunning views of the surrounding Arusha National Park.
  • Arrive at Momella Gate: Once you reach Momella Gate, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Moshi or Arusha.
  • Transfer to hotel: After the trek, you will be dropped off at your hotel for rest or onward travel.
