The Northern Circuit Kilmanjaro 9 days is the longest and most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization, fewer crowds, and the highest summit success rate.

This 9-day itinerary approaches from the western side via Lemosho/Shira, then circles the remote northern slopes before summiting from the east.

Day 0: Arrival – Moshi Hotel

• Elevation: ~900 m
• Habitat: Lowland / Tropical farmland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.

Meet your guides for briefing and gear check.

Overnight: Hotel in Moshi

Day 1: Hotel to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast and a full trip briefing at your hotel, meet your professional Karibu Adventure mountain team, including experienced guides, chefs, waiters, and porters who will accompany and support you throughout the climb. Drive to Londorossi Park Gate (approximately 3 hours), where registration formalities are completed. From here, a 4WD forest track leads to Lemosho Glades, the starting point of your trek.

Enjoy a gentle walk through the lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp (“Big Tree Camp”), surrounded by towering trees and rich birdlife. Upon arrival at camp, your Karibu Adventure guides will conduct the first routine medical check-up, including oxygen saturation and heart rate monitoring, to ensure you are adjusting well to the altitude. Daily health checks will continue every morning and evening throughout the climb for your safety and acclimatization monitoring.

Meanwhile, your dedicated porters will have already prepared the camp, while the chef and waiter serve fresh hot meals and drinks to keep you comfortable on the mountain.

Cross several streams before ascending over Shira Ridge and descending gently to Shira 1 Camp, beautifully situated beside a stream on the vast Shira Plateau.

Throughout the day, your Karibu Adventure guides will maintain a comfortable pace while sharing knowledge about the mountain, vegetation, and local environment. Upon arrival at camp, your mountain crew will welcome you with hot drinks, warm water for washing, and freshly prepared meals. Evening medical checks will also be conducted at camp.

The remainder of the day can be used for optional acclimatization hikes, helping your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Afterward, join the Northern Circuit route and descend to Moir Camp at 4,200 meters. This is an important acclimatization day as you will “climb high and sleep low,” helping your body adapt to the altitude. Upon arrival, your Karibu Adventure guides will perform another medical check to monitor acclimatization and overall health.

Distance: 14km/8mi
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Day 5: Moir Camp to Buffalo Camp

After breakfast and your morning medical check-up, begin a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. An optional acclimatization hike to the summit of Little Lent Hill (4,375 meters) is available before rejoining the Northern Circuit trail.

The route then follows a series of ascents and descents along the remote northern slopes of Kibo, leading to Buffalo Camp with impressive views across the Kenyan plains. Your dedicated Karibu Adventure porters move ahead daily to prepare camp before your arrival, ensuring your tents, dining area, and meals are ready after every trek.

Elevation: 4200m/13,780ft to 4020m/13,188ft
Distance: 12km/7mi
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave

Following breakfast and your daily medical check-up, the day begins with a climb along Buffalo Ridge before descending to Porfu Camp, where lunch is usually served. The trail then continues eastward around the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro to Rongai Third Cave.

Today’s trek is shorter, giving you more time to rest and recover as you continue acclimatizing to the altitude. Your Karibu Adventure guides will continue monitoring your health closely, while the chef and waiter provide nutritious meals designed to maintain your energy for the summit ahead.

Elevation: 4020m/13,188ft to 3800m/12,467ft
Distance: 8km/5mi
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7: Third Cave to School Hut

After breakfast and your morning health assessment, continue with a steady ascent across the Saddle, the barren alpine desert located between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Continue gradually uphill to School Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt.

After arriving, enjoy an early dinner prepared by your Karibu Adventure mountain chef and rest, as you will be awakened before midnight for the final ascent. Your guides will carry out a final pre-summit medical check in the evening to ensure you are physically ready for summit night.

Be sure to prepare all your summit gear, including warm clothing, headlamp, snacks, water, and camera before sleeping.

Elevation: 3800m/12,467ft to 4800m/15,748ft
Distance: 15km/8mi
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp

Around 11:30 PM, your Karibu Adventure guides will wake you with hot tea and biscuits before beginning the summit attempt under the stars. Trek steadily up the steep slopes of Kibo, reaching Hans Meyer Cave for a short rest before continuing toward Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters).

As dawn approaches, enjoy breathtaking views over Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding glaciers. From Gilman’s Point, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) — the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement with your guides while taking unforgettable summit photos at the Roof of Africa.

After celebrating at the summit, begin your descent via Stella Point to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain. This is the most demanding day of the trek, with 14–16 hours of hiking, so maintaining a steady pace, staying hydrated, and keeping your energy levels up are essential. Your Karibu Adventure guides will continue closely monitoring your health and wellbeing throughout the day.

Elevation: 4800m/15,748ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Descent: to 3950m/12,959ft

Day 9: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel

After breakfast and your final mountain medical check-up, continue descending through the lush rainforest to Mweka Park Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates. The lower sections of the trail can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended.

At the gate, the entire Karibu Adventure mountain team — including your guides, chefs, waiters, and porters — will gather to celebrate your successful climb with traditional Kilimanjaro songs and dancing. This joyful farewell celebration is one of the most memorable moments of the trek, as all crew members sing, dance, and celebrate together with the clients after successfully reaching the summit.

After the celebration, transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved shower, relaxation, and unforgettable memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
