The Shira Route (7 Days) is a scenic and less crowded way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, starting from the western side on the high Shira Plateau. It offers wide open landscapes, dramatic volcanic scenery, and a remote wilderness experience from the very beginning. The 7-day itinerary improves acclimatization and increases summit success chances.

A complete breakdown of your Shira Route climb — including altitude changes, terrain, hiking time, and acclimatization structure.
Day 0 – Arrival in Moshi (~890–900m)
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Karibu Adventure team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. You will meet your guides for a full briefing and gear check to ensure everything is ready for the climb. If time allows, enjoy a short walk in Moshi town to experience local markets and culture. Overnight at hotel.
Day 1 – Londorossi Gate – Shira One Camp
Drive through rainforest zone to Londorossi Gate, then continue to the Shira trailhead. Begin trekking across moorland and ridges with first views of Kilimanjaro before arriving at Shira One Camp. Hiking time ~3 hours.
Day 2 – Shira One Camp – Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral)
Trek across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic formations on Kilimanjaro. Optional climb to Shira Cathedral offers panoramic views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak before continuing to Shira 2 Camp. Hiking time 4–5 hours.
Day 3 – Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Important acclimatization day using “climb high, sleep low”. Trek to Lava Tower (4,600m) then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950m. This helps the body adapt to altitude. Hiking time 7–8 hours.
Day 4 – Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Climb the famous Barranco Wall and continue through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp. This is an important acclimatization day with stunning views of Kibo glaciers. Hiking time 4–5 hours.
Day 5 – Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Trek to Barafu Camp, the final base before summit night. Terrain becomes dry alpine desert. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for midnight summit push. Hiking time 3–4 hours.
Day 6 – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Begin summit attempt at midnight under the stars. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Celebrate briefly before descending to Mweka Camp for overnight rest. Total hiking time 10–12 hours.
Day 7 – Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate where you receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for rest, celebration, and relaxation.
