Karibu Adventure Kilimanjaro Vegetation Experience

Kilimanjaro vegetation – Mount Kilimanjaro is comprised of 5 very distinct vegetation zones of approx 1000m that have formed because of the mountain’s location and extreme height. As Mount Kilimanjaro sits just south of the equator, it’s base experiences the heat and sunshine associated with this part of Africa.

Mountain Gladiolus

MOUNTAIN GLADIOLUS

A striking flowering plant found along the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Known for its tall stems and vibrant, trumpet-shaped blooms.

Adds bright color to the landscape, especially along routes like Machame.

Impatiens kilimanjari

IMPATIENS KILIMANJARI

Shares this rich habitat with other beautiful species like Viola eminii and Impatiens pseudoviola.

Kniphofia thomsonii

KNIPHOFIA THOMSONII (RED-HOT POKER)

Found in the low alpine zone between 2800m and 4000m, just above the forest.

This zone includes alpine heath, where rainfall drops to about 1300mm per year.

Temperatures can fall below 0°C, with moisture mainly coming from constant mist.

Recognized by its tall spikes of bright red and orange flowers.

Grows among grasses and other flowers like Protea kilimandscharica.

Lobelia deckenii

LOBELIA DECKENII

Found in the moorland zone, where the climate becomes cooler and drier.

This zone receives about 525mm of rainfall per year with clearer skies.

A unique, endemic plant with a tall rosette form unlike garden lobelias.

Grows in the same habitat as giant groundsels in sheltered valleys.

One of the most distinctive plants on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Dendrosenecio kilimanjari

DENDROSENECIO KILIMANJARI (GIANT GROUNDSEL)

One of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic plants, found in high-altitude zones.

Grows in harsh alpine desert conditions with less than 200mm of rainfall.

Adapted to extreme cold, intense sun, and large daily temperature changes.

Often seen near the Saddle alongside sparse grasses and hardy plants.

Shares this environment with tough species like everlastings and alpine daisies.

Helichrysum newii

HELICHRYSUM NEWII

Found near the summit of Kibo, where almost no life can survive.

An “everlasting” plant adapted to extreme dryness and volcanic conditions.

Grows near fumaroles in places like Reusch Crater at around 5760m.

Survives with minimal water, where most moisture is lost or frozen.

Shares this harsh environment with slow-growing lichens, some among the oldest living organisms.
