Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro 7-Days Trek

Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro 7 Days is the steepest and most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro, ideal for climbers seeking a shorter, adventurous climb with high summit success. It offers beautiful rainforest, dramatic cliffs, and excellent acclimatization options.


Day 0: Arrival – Moshi Hotel

• Elevation: ~900 m
• Habitat: Lowland / Tropical farmland

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.

Meet your guides for briefing and gear check, ensuring your equipment is ready. If you arrive early, enjoy a short walk in Moshi town, exploring the local markets and culture.

Day 1: Hotel → Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp

• Elevation: 1,100 m → 2,750 m
• Distance: ~6 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Montane forest
• Meals: BLD

After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate, complete registration, and start your trek for Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro 7 Days .

The trail climbs steeply through dense rainforest, with opportunities to spot black-and-white Colobus monkeys and other wildlife.

Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, your first overnight stop. Tents are set up, hot water is provided, and guides give a briefing about the next day.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave → Barranco Camp

• Elevation: 2,750 m → 3,900 m
• Distance: 6 km
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
• Habitat: Rainforest → Moorland
• Meals: BLD

Continue your climb from Umbwe Cave, ascending through steep, lush rainforest toward Barranco Camp, located at the base of the famous Barranco Wall.

Take your first acclimatization hike in the area if desired.

Day 3: Barranco Wall Acclimatization – Barranco Camp (Second Night)

• Elevation: 3,900 m → 4,200 m → 3,900 m
• Distance: ~4–5 km round trip
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
• Meals: BLD

Today is an important acclimatization day.

Climb the Barranco Wall and explore nearby ridges and valleys. Return to Barranco Camp for lunch, rest, and further acclimatization walks.

Overnight: Barranco Camp


Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

• Elevation: 3,900 m → 4,000 m
• Distance: 6 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert / Moorland
• Meals: BLD

Trek over scree slopes and ridges, crossing the Karanga Valley. Enjoy the stunning views of Kibo and the surrounding peaks.

Arrive at Karanga Camp for lunch and an afternoon rest.

Overnight: Karanga Camp


Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

• Elevation: 4,000 m → 4,700 m
• Distance: 6 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: BLD

Continue your climb to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit.

Enjoy a hot meal, early rest, and prepare for the summit push the following night.

Overnight: Barafu Camp


Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Hut

• Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
• Distance: 7 km ascent, 14 km descent
• Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert → Icefields → Montane Forest
• Meals: BLD

Wake at midnight for tea and snacks, then begin your summit ascent (pole pole – slowly).

Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and enjoy the sunrise, panoramic views, and photos.

Descend via Barafu Camp, have lunch, and continue to Mweka Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Mweka Hut → Mweka Gate → Hotel / Celebration

• Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,700 m → 900 m
• Distance: 7 km
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest → Lowland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete sign-out procedures, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.

Celebrate your achievement with a hot shower, certificate presentation, and refreshments.

Optional Day 8: Fly Home or Safari

After breakfast, you may depart back home or continue to a Tanzania safari or other excursions.
