Mount Meru 4 Days Trek

Mount Meru Climb A Beautiful and Scenic Adventure
Mount Meru is a spectacular and often underrated trekking destination, perfect as a pre-Kilimanjaro acclimatization climb or as part of a trilogy of East Africa’s highest peaks. It is also an excellent pre-safari adventure for keen hikers and those seeking a rewarding challenge in Tanzania.
Mount Meru Trek 4-Days
Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters, is a dramatic stratovolcano located in Arusha National Park. This 4-day itinerary allows for proper acclimatization and a more relaxed pace, giving trekkers time to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife, and unique landscapes.
Day 1: Moshi/Arusha → Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, followed by a scenic 1.5–2 hour drive to Momella Gate.
After registration and a short briefing, the trek starts at 1,500 meters, leading you through lush tropical rainforest. This section is rich in wildlife, where you may spot giraffes, colobus monkeys, and baboons along the way.
After a 4–5 hour hike, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m), where you can relax, enjoy a warm meal, and settle in for the night.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut
After breakfast, the trek continues toward Saddle Hut at 3,500 meters. The trail becomes steeper as you transition from forest to the moorland zone.
Along the way, enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru Crater, and the surrounding landscapes. The terrain shifts to rocky paths and alpine vegetation, making this one of the most scenic sections of the climb.
After 4–5 hours, you reach Saddle Hut, located just below the crater. The afternoon is ideal for rest and acclimatization.
Optional: A short hike to Little Meru (3,800m) for spectacular panoramic views.
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Day 3: Saddle Hut → Summit (4,566m) → Miriakamba Hut
Your summit attempt begins around 2:30 AM. This challenging ascent takes you through rocky ridges and scree slopes as you climb toward the summit.
After 5–6 hours, you will reach the summit of Mount Meru (4,566m) at sunrise. The views are truly unforgettable, with panoramic vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Highlands, and Arusha National Park.
After celebrating at the top, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut.
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut → Momella Gate → Moshi/Arusha
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the forest. This 3–4 hour walk offers beautiful scenery and a chance to reflect on your achievement.
