Tipping Guidelines – Kilimanjaro, Safaris & General Services

Tipping Guidelines for Kilimanjaro, Tipping in Tanzania is a meaningful way to show appreciation for the dedication, care, and hard work of the teams who make your experience unforgettable. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a well-established tradition in the tourism industry, especially for mountain climbing and safari services.

At Karibu Adventure & Safaris Ltd, we aim to provide clear and fair guidance to help you understand tipping practices across all services.

Tipping Traditions on Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is supported by a large and highly dedicated team. Similar to trekking destinations like Nepal and Peru, tipping is customary and reflects your satisfaction with the experience—not the price of the climb.

Recommended Total Tip (Per Climber)

  • $250 – $350 (standard climbs)
  • $450 – $650 (larger crews / premium climbs)

Who Makes a Kilimanjaro Climb Possible

A successful Kilimanjaro climb is the result of teamwork behind the scenes and on the trail:

  • Porters: Carry equipment and maintain camp hygiene
  • Mountain Chefs: Prepare nutritious meals for climbers and crew
  • Assistant Guides & Lead Guides: Ensure safety, pace, and summit success
  • Waiters & Camp Crew: Serve meals and manage camp organization
  • Water & Supply Team: Deliver fresh supplies to high-altitude camps like Barafu (4,640 m)
  • Base Staff: Coordinate logistics and monitor the climb operations

Each role is essential, and tipping is distributed accordingly, though you may reward individuals separately if desired.

Kilimanjaro Tipping Guidelines (Per Day)

These recommendations are aligned with guidance from the Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society:

  • Lead Guide: $20 – $25
  • Assistant Guide: $15 – $20
  • Cook: $10 – $15
  • Porters (each): $6 – $10

💡 Tips are per group per day and typically pooled and distributed at the end of the trek.

Best Time & Method for Tipping (Kilimanjaro)

Tipping is usually done on the final day of your climb:

  • Each climber receives an envelope and tipping form
  • You can allocate tips for the entire crew and individuals
  • Place the money in the envelope and hand it to the manager
  • Distribution is handled confidentially and fairly

Our team is always available to assist if you have any questions.

Tipping on Safari

Your safari guide plays a vital role in your wildlife experience, from spotting animals to ensuring comfort and safety.

Recommended Tip

  • Safari Guide/Driver: $20 – $30 per day (per vehicle)

💡 For group safaris, the tip is shared among participants.

Tipping at Hotels & Lodges

  • General Staff (tip box): $5 – $10 per day
  • Housekeeping: $1 – $3 per day per one person
  • Waiters/Restaurant Staff: $5 – $10 depending on service

Tipping in Towns & Everyday Situations

In towns like Arusha or Moshi:

  • Local Guides: $10 – $15 per day
  • Drivers (short transfers): $5 – $10
  • Porters: $1 – $2 per one person

Important Notes

  • Tipping is voluntary but customary
  • Amounts depend on your satisfaction and experience
  • US Dollars (clean notes) or Tanzanian Shillings are accepted
  • Tips can be given directly or through a group collection

Why Tipping Matters

Tipping directly supports local communities and helps ensure fair wages for guides, porters, and service teams. Your contribution plays an important role in sustaining responsible and high-quality tourism in Tanzania.

At Karibu Adventure & Safaris Ltd, we are proud of our dedicated teams who work tirelessly to make your journey safe, enjoyable, and memorable. Tipping is a simple but meaningful way to say thank you.
