Machame Route 7-Day Kilimanjaro Trek
The 7-day Machame Route is ideal for better acclimatization, higher summit success rates, and more time to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes. From rainforest to alpine desert and summit icefields, this route offers stunning scenery and adventure.
Day 0: Arrival – Moshi Hotel
• Elevation: ~900 m
• Habitat: Lowland tropical / farmland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our team will greet you and transfer you to the hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a briefing and gear check.
If time allows, enjoy a short walk around Moshi town, exploring local markets, daily life, and culture.
Overnight stay: Hotel in Moshi (Bed & Breakfast)
Day 1: Hotel → Machame Gate → Machame Camp
• Elevation: 1,200 m → 3,000 m
• Distance: 13 km
• Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast, drive from your hotel to Machame Gate, passing villages, banana groves, and coffee plantations. Complete registration at the gate, then trek through dense rainforest toward Machame Camp.
Arrive at camp for tents, hot drinks, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Two Camp
• Elevation: 3,000 m → 3,800 m
• Distance: 9 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast and medical check, trek through rainforest ascending small valleys and rocky ridges. Enter the heath and moorland zone, enjoying views of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, and Kibo Peak.
Arrive at Shira Two Camp for hot drinks, dinner, and overnight.
Day 3: Shira Two → Barranco Camp (Acclimatization Day)
• Elevation: 3,800 m → 3,950 m
• Distance: 13 km
• Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
• Meals: BLD
Today is an important acclimatization day. After early breakfast and check, trek east toward Lava Tower (4,600 m) with a packed lunch, enjoying Western Breach, Arrow Glacier, and Kibo views.
Descend to Barranco Camp, located at the base of Barranco Wall, for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
• Elevation: 3,950 m → 3,900 m
• Distance: 6 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Moorland
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast and medical check, climb the Barranco Wall for acclimatization, then cross ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.
Enjoy lunch, rest, and a short afternoon hike for further acclimatization, before returning to camp for tea, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
• Elevation: 3,900 m → 4,556 m
• Distance: 5 km
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast, trek up steep slopes to Barafu Camp. The trail is short but steep, passing through alpine desert terrain.
Have early dinner at 17:00 and rest, preparing for the midnight summit push.
Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
• Elevation: 4,556 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
• Distance: 7 km to summit, 14 km to Mweka
• Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
• Ascent: 1,339 m
• Descent: 2,795 m
• Habitat: Alpine Desert → Icefields → Montane Forest
• Meals: BLD
Wake at midnight for tea and snacks, then begin ascent to Uhuru Peak. Trek slowly (pole pole) over scree and rocky terrain.
Reach Gillman’s Point (5,861 m) for crater and glacier views, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for photos and celebration.
Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue through moorland and forest to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Mweka Hut → Mweka Gate → Hotel (Celebration Day)
• Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,700 m → 900 m
• Distance: 7 km descent
• Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest → Lowland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)
After breakfast at Mweka Hut, descend through montane forest to Mweka Gate, where you sign out.
Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your Kilimanjaro summit achievement with a shower, drinks, photos, and certificate presentation.
