Rongai Route 6-Day Kilimanjaro Trek
The Rongai Route is the northern approach to Kilimanjaro, offering gentler gradients, quieter trails, and unique northern scenery. This 6-day itinerary provides excellent acclimatization and high summit success rates.
Day 0: Arrival – Moshi Hotel
• Elevation: ~900 m
• Habitat: Lowland tropical / farmland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. You will meet your guides for a briefing and gear check.
If you arrive early, enjoy a short walk around Moshi town with your guide, exploring local markets, culture, and daily life.
Overnight stay: Hotel in Moshi (Bed & Breakfast)
Day 1: Hotel → Rongai Gate → Simba Camp
• Elevation: 1,200 m → 2,800 m
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast, drive from your hotel to Rongai Gate, completing registration and starting the trek through montane forest. Trek uphill to Simba Camp, where tents are set up, and enjoy hot drinks, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 2: Simba Camp → Kikelewa Camp
• Elevation: 2,800 m → 3,600 m
• Distance: 10 km
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
• Habitat: Moorland / Heath
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast and medical check, trek through moorland and heather zones, crossing valleys and ridges. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, enjoy lunch, tea, dinner, and prepare for an early start the next day.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Hut (Acclimatization Day)
• Elevation: 3,600 m → 4,300 m
• Distance: 8 km
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert / Rocky Terrain
• Meals: BLD
This acclimatization day includes a short trek toward Mawenzi Peak viewpoint (without attempting the summit), offering breathtaking views of the rugged Mawenzi ridges.
Return to Mawenzi Tarn Hut for lunch, rest, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Hut → Kibo Camp
• Elevation: 4,300 m → 4,700 m
• Distance: 9 km
• Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert
• Meals: BLD
After breakfast, trek across alpine desert terrain toward Kibo Camp, enjoying views of the summit and surrounding glaciers.
Arrive at Kibo Camp for early dinner and rest, preparing for the midnight summit ascent.
Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mawenzi Tarn Hut
• Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m → 4,300 m
• Distance: 7 km to summit, 12 km descent
• Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert → Icefields
• Meals: BLD
Wake at midnight for tea and snacks, then begin the summit ascent (pole pole – slow and steady). Trek through scree and rocky terrain to Gillman’s Point (5,861 m), then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for photos and celebration.
Descend to Mawenzi Tarn Hut for rest, lunch, and overnight stay.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Hut → Rongai Gate → Hotel (Celebration Day)
• Elevation: 4,300 m → 1,200 m
• Distance: 12–14 km descent
• Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
• Habitat: Alpine Desert → Montane Forest → Lowland
• Meals: B (Breakfast)
After breakfast, descend through alpine desert and montane forest to Rongai Gate. Complete sign-out procedures and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.
