💚 With proper preparation and the full support of Karibu Adventure, your climb on Mount Kilimanjaro will be safer, smoother, and more comfortable. Below we have listed some of the medications we recommend you bring, and we also kindly advise you to consult your doctor before traveling.

Acetazolamide Diamox

DIAMOX (Acetazolamide)

Dosage: 2 x 125 mg per day.

Prescribed to support altitude acclimatization and reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Should be started 2 days before your climb and continued until reaching the highest elevation on the trek.

Starting early helps identify any adverse reactions before the ascent begins.

Ondansetron Zofran

ZOFRAN (Ondansetron)

Supply: x12 dissolvable tablets (or bring Phenergan).

Used to reduce severe nausea caused by Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), helping climbers feel more comfortable during ascent.

It may be used to provide temporary relief and allow time for proper acclimatization.

If symptoms persist and acclimatization does not occur, descent is always required for safety.

Tinidazole

TINDAMAX (Tinidazole)

Use: 1 complete course for protozoan diarrhea.

Tinidazole is an anti-parasitic drug used to treat protozoan infections, including amoebic and other parasitic diseases.

It is widely used across Europe and developing countries for effective treatment of intestinal infections.

Class: Nitroimidazole antibiotics (derived from 2-methylimidazole).

Malarone

MALARONE

Generic: Atovaquone 250mg, Proguanil Hydrochloride 100mg

Used to prevent and treat malaria from mosquito bites. It kills parasites in red blood cells and body tissues.

Sometimes combined with other medication (like primaquine) for full treatment and to prevent relapse.

Class: Antimalarial drugs.

Dexamethasone Decadron

DECADRON (Dexamethasone)

Dosage: 4mg x 8 tablets.

Used in cases of severe headache caused by Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), especially when urgent descent is required.

This steroid reduces brain inflammation, which is the main cause of severe AMS-related headaches.

It is not taken during ascent, but only used alongside descent for safety.

If symptoms persist and acclimatization fails, immediate descent is required.

CIPRO ANTIBIOTIC – 1 complete course for traveler’s diarrhea.

AMBIEN:Generic name: zolpidem tartrate 5mg .Zolpidem is used to treat sleep problems (insomnia) in adults. If you have trouble falling asleep, it helps you fall asleep faster, so you can get a better night’s rest. Zolpidem belongs to a class of drugs called sedative-hypnotics. It acts on your brain to produce a calming effect. (As a professional medical guide not advice to use this during your climb because may slow your breathing system)

IBUPROFEN-  is a medication in the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class that is used for treating pain, fever, and inflammation.
