The Classic “Coca-Cola Route” to Kilimanjaro
The Marangu Route is one of the oldest and most established routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, located in northern Tanzania. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it more comfortable for climbers. The trail follows a gradual ascent through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then descends along the same path.
Day 0: Arrival in Moshi
Elevation: ~890–900 m
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Karibu Adventure team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.
You will meet your guides for a full briefing and gear check to prepare for the climb. If time allows, enjoy a short walk in Moshi town and experience local culture.

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,200 m → 2,750 m
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Drive to Marangu Gate and begin your trek through lush rainforest.
Watch for colobus monkeys and rich birdlife as you ascend to Mandara Hut.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,750 m → 3,720 m
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Continue through heath and moorland zones with giant lobelias and wide alpine views.
Arrive at Horombo Hut for rest and acclimatization.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascend into a barren volcanic landscape with views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s peaks.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 4: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
Distance: 18 km
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine / Moorland
Begin your summit push at midnight.
Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, then descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi
Elevation: 3,720 m → 1,200–1,300 m
Distance: ~20 km descent
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Descend through rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate.
Transfer back to Moshi for celebration and relaxation.
Day 6: Departure / Safari / Excursion
After breakfast, your journey continues based on your travel plans:
